PhD Studentships - 2004

To further its objectives the Society is funding a series of programmes one of which offers studentships aimed at students (of any nationality) who are registered for a PhD at a university in the United Kingdom and which operate under the following conditions in 2004.

  • The scholarship holder will have completed the first year of full time study on a doctoral programme at the institution from which they apply by the end of September 2004.
  • The scholarships are for two years and the total award is £40,000 (or the equivalent in other currencies). This sum is meant to cover all expenses including fees.
  • The funds will be paid direct to the institution in three tranches; the first of £17,000 in September 2004, the second also of £17,000 in September 2005, subject to a satisfactory student progress report from the student supervisor, and the third of £6,000 on successful completion and award of a doctorate.
  • The awards will be disbursed to the scholarship holder by the receiving institution with no deduction of overhead.
  • The application needs to take the form of one Word document (with no added logos) from the Head of the Business School or their representative). It should comprise the following;
    • A proposal outlining the nature of the research being undertaken, setting out what has been achieved to date, a plan for completion of the Ph.D. and a short CV. (maximum 6,000 words in total, 1½ spacing);
    • A letter of support from the relevant institutional authority (Head of Department, School or equivalent), and
    • A letter of support from the relevant PhD supervisor

  • Recipients of the scholarships will be required to submit
    • A report to the SAMS Council giving details of their progress at the end of their second year of full-time study.
    • At least one article to JMS for review and possible publication.

Five scholarships will be awarded in 2004. Four of the scholarships are named for former editors of the Journal of Management Studies; Professors Tom Lupton, Geoff Lockett, Karen Legge, Grigor McClelland and the fifth is known as the SAMS Scholarship.

The deadline for applications will be the 4th May 2004 (as for ESRC studentships) and only one nomination per institution will be accepted. SAMS Council members will review the applications and applicants will be notified of a decision by the middle of June.

Please note that we would not expect students who currently hold ESRC studentships to apply for these awards.
